HOMEOPATHY
What is Homeopathy?
For people approaching homeopathy for the first time or who want to understand something about it the best place to start in my view is with how it differs from orthodox or classical medicine.
What does the therapist need to understand, what does the therapist see as “what needs to be cured”?
In orthodox medicine the “disease” is considered to be the signs and symptoms related to a specific cause. To the homeopath this amounts to mistaking the effect for the cause. The homeopath understands that there are two essential aspects, an internal world and an external world. The internal world is the dynamic world of causes and is not visible or measurable by the five senses. This hidden inner dimension is really where the disturbance in the health is first manifested. This inner disturbance is the cause of the external signs and symptoms that develop as an attempt to preserve the life and functionality of a person who has developed an illness.
Without addressing the inner cause of the disease at it’s source the symptoms can be suppressed or dulled or someone can be made insensible to them but the health will not be improved with such treatment. The homeopath understands this and works to develop an understanding of what characterizes the essential inner nature of the disease.
The disease is not understood to be something separate from the health, but it is an “alteration in the health” of a person.
The homeopathic remedies prepared in a specific way, (not through dilution, but through potentization or dynamization) act on the energetic matrix of the inner organization of the person. My intuition tells me that in time this may be proved to be a quantum-mechanical process but at this moment in time classical medicine has really not integrated the quantum world into physiology or pathology.
Recent research in “quantum coherence domains” suggests this may explain how homeopathic remedies work. There is some action on the quantum mechanical organization of the system internally and this results in the healing reaction to a carefully selected homeopathic remedy.
Homeopathy was developed by the great German physician and chemist Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843)
The most fundamental principles are:
1. The law of Similars…
Like Cures Like or perhaps “treat like with like.” this is so fundamental to homeopathy that the name “homeo” similar, “pathy” suffering, comes from this principle. This is simply a principle in nature that was first recognized thousands of years ago and was finally developed by Samuel Hahnemann into a coherent, reproducible system.
2. Individualized treatment
All of the signs and symptoms of a persons disease are noted and investigated by the homeopath and it’s these signs and symptoms which guide the homeopath to the remedy the person needs. Diagnosis is important of course but no matter the name of the disease, the homeopathic treatment demands a careful investigation of each case because ten cases of the same disease in ten different people may need ten different homeopathic remedies in order to provoke the needed healing reaction. It’s the persons expression of the disease and reactions to the disease that individualize the disease process and point to the needed remedy.
Remedies are suggested not on the basis of one symptom or syndrome but on the larger picture of the persons nature and constitution, past medical history, life history, life style and reactions to stress. Disease is an alteration in the health and it is not an isolated event but an expression of disharmony in the whole person and requires this larger context in order to be well understood.
In order to make a successful remedy selection the homeopath needs to spend time with people. The initial consultation usually lasts between on hour and a half to two hours.
3. The Minimum Dose
This seems to be the real stumbling block to a larger acceptance of homeopathy. There is a disbelief that such small doses can be effective. This is simply caused by the prejudice of the materialistic paradigm that has been so profoundly indoctrinated into all of us that we don’t realize that this is only one interpretation of our experience and that there are other possible interpretations that may be equally or even more efficacious. There is good modern research demonstrating that homeopathic potencies can be identified from placebo, which itself demonstrates “there is something there” although we can’t measure it yet.

If in fact the mode of action was truly understood, this would have implications far beyond homeopathy itself and this may be why there is so much resistance.
4. Potentization or Dynamization
Homeopathic remedies are made using a unique process of serial dilution and physical agitation. This physical agitation can be in both the liquid medium or solid medium using “succussion” for liquids and “trituration” for solids. It’s the effect of the adding of kinetic energy into the matrix of the diluting medium that is not well understood by modern science. This is not simply a dilution but a process of freeing the internal essence of the remedy substance into the medium of dilution in a step wise fashion.
Due to this mode of preparation the homeopathic remedy has the advantage of both reaching into the life processes of the inner person and at the same time being completely safe and non-toxic.
Remedies can be given to pregnant women and children, to animals and even plants and are completely safe.
Homeopathy offers anyone in need of health care the potential of a deep and lasting cure. Our personal experiences as practitioners of homeopathy has shown over and again that it can promote dramatic changes on the physical, emotional and mental levels. Very few of the modalities and methods of health care can offer such a profound hope to those in need of help.
For truth is co-eternal with the all-wise, benevolent deity. It may long escape the observation of man, until the time foreordained by providence arrives, when its rays shall irresistibly break through the clouds of prejudice and usher in the dawn of a day which shall shine with a bright and inextinguishable light for the weal of the human race.
Samuel Hahnemann, Organon of Medicine, Introduction, footnote 30.
WHO goes to a HOMEOPATH?
People form all walks of life use homeopathy for many different reasons. Homeopathy is applicable to whole spectrum of conditions from the acute, chronic and epidemic ones and complements western medical approaches.
Imbalances can manifest in many ways in a person. For example, some people may simply feel “off” physically or emotionally. Some may have symptoms for which no clear cause or diagnosis can be found or for which there is no relief from the treatments being conventionally offered. Some people use homeopathy for adjunctive support to their necessary prescribed treatment by their traditional doctors to help cope with side effects and to restore vitality. Since homeopathic remedies are devoid of all chemical toxicity homeopathy is the ideal system of medicine for people of all ages, even the most sensitive like an expectant mother or a newborn baby.
Thus, homeopathy may be helpful whether you have a major health concern or are in good health and want to facilitate your own personal growth and overall well-being.
